Achievement

　Eight hours have passed since the world was flooded with monsters. The city, illuminated by the morning sun, revealed its changed appearance, and the monster’s damage, which continued to increase with the passage of time, showed no signs of abating.

　The police and the Self-Defense Forces, which until then had been frantically rescuing residents from the monster-infested city, finally quit their rescue efforts. No, to be precise, it seemed they had reached the limit of their capabilities.

　The damage was caused not only in certain areas of Japan but throughout the country― and even around the world― by monsters that appeared simultaneously in multiple locations.

　Weapons that were effective against humans were infinitely less effective against monsters, and the effect was such that they couldn’t rescue and protect all the people, even though they had probably increased their levels.

　The gunfire that had been echoing through the night began to diminish in number with each passing hour and turned, by the time one noticed it, into something terribly sporadic.

　This must have been understood by those who were in a position to be protected. In proportion to the decrease in the number of gunshots echoing through the city, the number of people wandering around the streets with weapons in their hands increased dramatically.

(Someone…… is fighting?)

　While wandering around the city looking for goblins, he suddenly heard the sound of battle. The noise particular to goblins followed by the impatient voice of some men led Akira quietly to the spot where the sound was coming from.

　Hiding himself, he approached the source of the sound and found three men fighting against a lone goblin.

　They did not look that much older than he was. Probably college students.

　After taking a guess, Akira decided to hide in the shadows and watch the scene for the time being.

　With a shout, one of the three swung a battered and twisted metal bat in his hand.

　In contrast, the goblin raised a deafening cry and held his club in his hand above his head to intercept the man’s swinging bat head-on.

　――A violent ” bang” sound echoed around the area.

　The goblin grinned as he blocked the man’s attack.

　But the others did not miss the opportunity. One of them swung a bat at the goblin’s flank, which arm was lifted to catch the attacker and therefore, exposed.

　The impact of the swinging bat caused the goblin to let out a small scream, knocking down the club.

　Then, perhaps seeing this as an opportunity, the man who swung the bat first quickly kicked away the club dropped so that the goblin could not immediately pick it up, and immediately another man raised the bat in his hand and swung it down on the goblin’s body as if to follow up.

　――A dull thud sound of flesh being struck. Next came the shrieks of the goblin.

　From there, it was a one-sided assault.

　Perhaps they have finished off a goblin more than once or twice.

　Akira quietly left the scene as the men swung their bats repeatedly as if they had become accustomed to doing so, until the goblin had ceased to breathe.

　We now lived in an age in which information posted on the Internet was instantly shared and diffused.

　Goblins were frequently mentioned on the Internet as a relatively easy opponent to defeat among all monsters. There was even a thread on a message board dedicated to the topic, “First, let’s level up by defeating goblins.”

“Yeah……”

　Surely, the police and the Self-Defense Forces couldn’t be unaware of this fact.

　The police and the Self-Defense Forces, who were now retreating, would soon be back with their firearms and start mopping up the goblins en masse, this time not to rescue the residents, but to level the area.

　The number of monsters in the city seems to be increasing by the minute, but even so, if they continued to target just one type of monster, they would disappear in no time at all.
